YLC’s communications coordinator, Deborah Makinde, recently caught up with aspiring actress and salon owner, Rita Balogun. Check out what Rita had to say about running her own business and the advice she has for fellow entrepreneurs below.
On starting her on business:
I didn’t necessarily start my own business. My mother started the salon 16 years ago and at the time I never knew that one day I would be the one taking over. Along with the Head of Operations Chanel Brooklyn we have rebranded the salon over the last 5 years and gone from Radiant hair and beauty salon to Radiant London Salon. My daily inspiration now is for our salon to become one of the best high end salons in the UK. To be able to create a space for women to be able run away from their hectic lives and enjoy a day of luxury, getting their hair done and sipping on a drink at the same time.
On the best & most challenging thing about running a business:
The most challenging thing about running a business is learning how to manage your finances and people. It’s one thing to have a vision and another to have a team who understand. Learning to correct staff without offending has been a challenging thing.
On facing and overcoming obstacles:
Everyday has a new obstacle to be honest and often just as we are overcoming one, another one sneakily pops up! One mainly has been getting the right staff, in a world of self-made stylists it’s challenging to get the right staff to join our family but we are nearly there!
On staying motivated:
The vision of where I see the life that I want for myself (is what keeps me motivated). Also my family. I have a strong desire to make them proud and to be a great example for my younger brothers and the younger generation of girl bosses coming up behind me.
On tips for fellow entrepreneurs:
Trust God and your Journey. Stay focused. Find time for yourself. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Most importantly follow your gut feeling, it will save from a lot of havoc in the future.
